In the Bible, Zion represents the physical city of Jerusalem, the spiritual heart of Israel, and God's dwelling place. It evolves from a captured Jebusite fortress (2 Samuel 5:7) into a symbol for the city of God, heavenly Jerusalem, and the ultimate, secure hope for believers. It signifies God's presence and kingdom.
Zion first appears in the Bible in , which speaks of David’s capture of “the fortress of Zion” (NIV) Since the fortress formed part of ancient Jerusalem, “Zion” often denotes Jerusalem. When the temple is built, Mount Zion, with its high citadels and solid ramparts, becomes the “city of the great King” ().
At the heart of God’s creation of the new heaven and the new earth is a new Jerusalem.
